Biology of Aquatic Organisms and Ecosystems

Team Evolution of Biomineralization

I am a CNRS Research Scientist (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) since 2001. From 2001 to 2006, I worked in the Laboratory of Coastal Geomorphology of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, in Dinard.  Since 2006, I do research and teaching in the Marine Biological Station of the MNHN (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle) based in Dinard (North Brittany, France). I completed a Ph.D. in Coastal Biogeography at the University of Rennes (2000) and a Post-doctoral position at the EPHE (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes) of Paris (2001).

Research interests

I am involved in several projects related with the ecology of tube-dwelling worms and worm reefs in several areas of the World. The main models are Lanice conchilega, Sabellaria alveolata and Phragmatopoma caudata. I am very interested to study also Idanthyrsus pennatus, Gunnarea capensis and other Sabellariidae, Terebellidae and Serpulidae around the World. The aim of the research is to understand the interactions between these polychaetes vs sediment in an evolutionary context (at all scales: cement to reef) and the ecology of reef-building tubeworms. Another part of my research, more applied, is to develop methods for coastal and marine mapping with acoustic and/or optic images.

I work in a Research Unit directed by Dr Sylvie Dufour (CNRS) and in the team ‘Evolution of Biomineralization’ led by Dr Pascal-Jean Lopez (CNRS).

Publications

Of a total of 251 titles, 12 refer to books, manuals and atlas and 11 to book chapters,  65 are journal papers or similarly refered contributions, 44 refer to published abstracts and 62 to technical reports, 8 are published lessons, 18 are maps and 31 are posters + 31 oral communications English, French and Portuguese.

Research programs and expeditions

I took part in 13 International Research Programs and 29 National Research Programs or Technical studies and co-organized 4 International Workshops.

I took part in several expeditions in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, French Caribbean Islands, French Polynesia, Iceland, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mayotte, Réunion Island, Scotland, 12 oceanographic campaigns (Atlantic and Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and The Channel) and 14 coastal campaigns (The Channel). I carried out many stays in several universities of Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Spain, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. Finally, I carried out approximately 650 scientific divings in the Atlantic (~400 for my Ph.D.) (Europe, Caribbean and South America), Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Teaching

I taught in the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle and the universities of Rennes as Associate Lecturer. I gave conferences in the universities of Clermont-Ferrand, Paris (Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV, Pierre et Marie Curie UPMC), Fortaleza (UFC, Brazil), Curitiba (UFPr, Brazil) and São Paulo (USP, UNIFIEO, Brazil), for graduate students of the Duke University (USA) and for engineers of IFREMER, and TOTAL.

I have directed or co-directed 6 Graduate students, 35 Msc students, 4 PhD and 4 Post-Doc students in Biology, Ecology, Geography and Geology from several Universities and High Schools of France (Brest, Caen, Clermont-Ferrand II, Lille I, Montpellier III, Nancy I, Nantes, Orsay, Paris I, Paris IV, Pau, Rennes1, Rennes II, CNAM, ENS, EPHE, IFMA, MNHN), Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Estonia, Ethiopia, Ireland, Italy, Madagascar, Mauritania, Spain and The Netherlands.

Naturalist activities

I took part in many (>50) Research National and Regional Programs, especially in the field of Ornithology, but also in Mammalogy, Herpetology, Entomology and Botany (atlas, inventory, counting, field survey, sampling, monitoring, etc). I am particularly interested in Birds, Mammals, Amphibians and Butterflies. I am a licensed bird ringer of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle of Paris (Centre de Recherche par le Baguage des Populations d’Oiseaux).
